FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PMA BOOTH# D119 INTRODUCING THE GC-S1 DIGITAL STILL CAMERA WITH 10x OPTICAL ZOOM AND WIRELESS INFRARED INTERFACE (IrDA)
New Orleans, February 12, 1998... JVC proudly announces the GC-S1 Û a compact digital still camera that reflects the unrivaled technical expertise developed by JVC over its long history as a leading manufacturer of video cameras. High-quality, full VGA imaging compliments simplicity of operation and versatility, along with such advanced features as a 10x optical zoom and innovative wireless digital data transfer using the IrTran-P infrared protocol.
Shooting
The large F1.6 lens with a 180-degree swivel mount Û assures sufficient exposure even in many indoor situations. But when ambient light levels fall too low, the built-in flash system is activated (with the opportunity for manual override). The 10x optical zoom allows close-up pictures at full resolution, so after transfer to a computer there is often no need to enlarge pictures digitally. Digital imaging of the VGA pictures is handled by a 1.4"-inch CCD with 350,000 pixels. Other convenient features include automatic control of focus, iris and white balance, although manual focus is permitted. Shutter speed varies between 1/8 sec. and 1/1000 sec.
To make it easy for the user to frame each picture before pressing the shutter, there is a 1.8" TFT color LCD monitor Û with adjustable brightness settings Û that can also be used to review photos already stored in the camera. Unwanted pictures can thus be identified and deleted, freeing up memory for further shooting. Photographic data is stored (in JPEG format) within the internal 4MB flash memory, which is sufficient for 30 fine-mode pictures, or 50 standard pictures, or 100 economy-mode pictures. It is possible to expand storage capacity by inserting a CompactFlash™ card (sold separately) into the GC-S1, which has a slot for the purpose. Stored pictures can also be transferred between internal memory and CompactFlash™ cards for streamlined editing and organization.
The user-friendly GC-S1 operates on 4 AA-size batteries, and has a power-save mode that automatically switches the camera off if it is unused for more than a minute. Other features include a 15-second self-timer for group portraits, and a date/time stamp (year/month/day/time).
Versatile connectivity
In addition to viewing pictures on the LCD monitor, it is possible to connect this camera directly to a TV to put on a show for friends and family, thus making the most of the "zero-wait" advantage of digital photography. And when it comes to exporting the images for processing and/or printing, the GC-S1 offers exceptional flexibility: both infrared and serial interfaces.
One of the most ingenious features of this camera is the built-in infrared (IrDA) interface. This is compliant with the new IrTran-P (Infrared Transferred Picture) protocol, specially developed for the rapidly evolving world of digital photography. It enables cable-free data transfer to any IrTran-P compliant peripheral, such as JVCÌs GV-HT1 mini video printer. Using the GV-HT1, it is possible to print color photos on the spot.
Another quick and problem-free way to transfer digital images to a Windows® or Macintosh® computer is via serial interface (driver software is supplied). This type of cable-mediated transfer makes it just as easy to move a picture to a laptop computer as it is to a desktop computer. And once in the computer, images can be processed, printed, attached to e-mail or displayed on web sites.
Software
The GC-S1 comes supplied with connection cables for Windows and Macintosh computers as well as software: Picture Navigator and PhotoSuiteâ SE. Picture Navigator allows sorting, deleting and slide-show displays. And with PhotoSuite® SE Û a popular graphic software package from MGI Software Corp. Û the user can sharpen or soften a picture, add special effects, apply frames and templates, insert word balloons, and also create a simple slide show.
Attractive print effects
Even without using a computer, this versatile camera offers a range of creative opportunities, including 9 decorative templates and such special effects as black & white, sepia, enlarge, and multiscreen (4 or 16 frames per print).
The GC-S1 will be available in the United States in the Spring at a nationally advertised price of $699.95.
